Frequently Asked Questions

What is gluten?
Gluten is a specific type of protein that some folks cannot digest, or that triggers autoimmune and/or allergic reactions in some people. Gluten is in several grains—most commonly Wheat, Rye, Barley, Kamut and Spelt, but can occur in many products and occasionally other grains (such as corn or Oats) due to shared farming or share processing facilities. It’s also tough to avoid in a shared kitchen. Some folks can have minimal gluten, and others have to avoid it entirely, as even a few grains of flour can trigger a dangerous health reaction. At Om Nohm Gluten Free, we have a dedicated Gluten-Free facility to protect the safety of even the most sensitive GF person.
I’m new to GF, where do I start?
It’s best to find some resources and a few people to talk to about this transition—come and see us! You are not alone. There are copious resources online—we have listed a few of our favorites on our Resources Page.
I have a GF family member coming to visit—how can I prepare their food safely?
A couple ideas to consider are:

  • Maybe having some savory and sweet items available for your guest, from which to choose—our Bakery Boxes are a great option for this!
  • Many foods are naturally gluten free—it’s not necessary to buy extra items, though they are available for you in most grocery stores and our shop. Potatoes, rice, these are classic GF staples common to our region—just remember to check labels for GF processing.
  • Not all GF is created equal—some quality is better than others—we offer you only the best!
  • Watch for cross contamination—knives going back into condiment jars after spreading on non GF breads contaminate that jar with GF cross-over, shared toasters, shared unwashed pans, cutting boards and colanders, unwiped counter tops—these all need awareness for the safety of your GF guest or family member.

Why does GF food cost so much?
I feel your familiar pain in the pocketbook. We GF people often do have to budget more for food than other folks, and we feel the pinch in other places financially—but more on food can mean less on medicine and health care. Gluten Free grain production is not subsidized by the US government, leaving the pricing much higher than some standards that are subsidized. The classic supply and demand are also issues contributing to this higher cost.

I believe if you are going to purchase something at premium cost, it should have premium quality and nutrition—at Om Nohm Gluten Free, we promise that to you. We are one of the few GF companies that is committed to all-natural, whole grain, non GMO food ingredients. We hand-make all food in small batches, and sell it for the same price-per-ounce as the major GF competitors. Our food is High Quality, fun and delicious. We hope you try us.

Do you use GMO ingredients?
Our ethics lead us to avoid GMO ingredients, for health and environmental reasons. We purchase ingredients from companies that promise not to use GMOs in food production, like Bob’s Red Mill.
